Turn the Tide: Special Needs Programme

Sentinel Ocean Alliance delivers an inclusive, ocean-based Special Needs Programme for children attending LSEN schools across Cape Town. This adapted version of our Turn the Tide Ocean Therapy Programme provides access to the ocean for neurodiverse children and children with physical disabilities, combining swimming, ocean literacy, mindfulness, and psychosocial support.

Each group participates in the programme for six months to a year, allowing time for steady progress, trust-building, and meaningful connection. Sessions are led by specially trained coaches who receive ongoing instruction in adaptive surf and swim techniques, trauma-informed facilitation, and inclusive teaching strategies.

Our adaptive curriculum is designed to meet each learner where they are. Using modified teaching methods, sensory activities, and positive reinforcement, we help children develop water confidence, improve coordination, and experience the therapeutic benefits of time in nature.

To ensure accessibility, we provide adaptive swimming equipment, beach wheelchairs, and all necessary gear and meals. With a low coach-to-learner ratio, each child receives close support and individual attention.

Ninety-three percent of participants show measurable improvements in water confidence and safety awareness within the first eight weeks.

As we expand this programme, our goal is to make the ocean a place of belonging for all children — a space where difference is met with inclusion, and ability is redefined through courage, connection, and care.
